Canadian Wildlife Safety
Exploring Canada's wilderness comes with the responsibility of protecting yourself and the local ecosystem.
-
Carry Bear Spray
Mandatory for hikes in Jasper. Carry it in a hip holster, not inside your pack. Ensure you know how to toggle safety and spray.
-
Make Noise
Bears and cougars avoid human interaction if they hear you. Call out, clap, or talk in groups, particularly near rushing streams or brush.
-
Marine Distances
Keep a minimum distance of 100 meters from marine mammals on Vancouver Island shores. Double that to 200 meters for Orcas.
-
Safe Elk Distance
Keep 30 meters away from elk, deer, and sheep. Male elk are aggressive in autumn (rutting season), and females are defensive in spring.
Canadian Trail Preparation List
Parks Canada Discovery Pass
Buy a Discovery Pass online or at park gates. Display it clearly on your vehicle's front windshield while parked.
Check Trail Bulletins
Verify mudslides, bear activity closures, or route construction logs on the official Parks Canada website before heading out.
Pack-Out Garbage Systems
Most trails do not have garbage bins. Bring garbage bags to secure and pack out all food remnants and trash.
Emergency Park Dispatch
Save regional warden dispatch numbers in your phone before entering cell-dead valleys. Call 911 for search and rescue.
