Slow travel focuses on depth of experience rather than speed. Instead of hitting ten destinations in a week, we advocate for spending several days in one location—like Yosemite Valley or Jasper—to appreciate its local trails, wildlife, and history, which is also ecologically sustainable.
For US parks, purchase the "America the Beautiful" annual pass ($80) online at USGS Store or at any park gate. For Canadian national parks, buy the Parks Canada Discovery Pass (individual or family) online or at regional entry points.
Always maintain safe distances: 100 meters (100 yards) from large predators like grizzly bears, black bears, cougars, and wolves; and 25-30 meters from bison, elk, moose, deer, and sheep. Never feed animals or leave food storage units unlocked.
During peak seasons, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is restricted to park shuttles. You can ride the free shuttle from the visitor center. To hike The Narrows, check the morning weather forecast for flash flood warnings. Ensure you wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and rent walking sticks.
Mobile signals are weak or non-existent in deep canyons and remote wilderness zones. Download offline maps (such as Gaia GPS or Google Maps offline) to your device and carry physical topo maps for backup navigation.
